Birds and Beasts

Birds and Beasts combine their love of music and the natural world to bring animals’ stories to life in their memorable ‘feral pop’. Imagine a parallel universe where David Attenborough left the BBC in 1967 and moved to California to write some songs and you will get somewhere close to the sound of Birds and Beasts. This band create distinctive music that really gets under your skin. A simple concept that connects with audiences; the band have grown quickly and people love to pick their favourite creature to join the mailing list after gigs. This interactivity is important to the band; they send a surprising fact about the chosen animal to each new member of the mailing list and along the way have been inspired to write new material. The idea took root whilst Leo and Anna Brazil were marooned in a log cabin during a fierce German snowstorm. Luckily they had a big stack of nature documentaries and an acoustic guitar handy to start on some songs, so on their return sought out Hep Cairns and Luke Granata to complete the line-up and evolve the music further. Their first single ‘Turn With The Tide’ was launched with a sold-out show at their local theatre and found them a loyal following. Their aim is to expand their audience with their second single and this time the launch party is also animal themed fancy dress. The songs cover: lone scorpions’ drive to find a mate, spiders’ terrifying courting ordeals, the bizarre strategies fish use to attract the opposite sex and the impossible demands of female birds. Although rooted in tales of creatures great and small, the words are universal and resonate with the listener, connecting us to the animal kingdom of which we are a part.
